Top FAQs About Dental Insurance For Kids – Answered!

Check out these frequently asked questions, or call us at (703) 646-1805 to speak with our team.

What does dental insurance usually cover?

Dental insurance typically covers 100% of the cost of preventive care for kids each year, including teeth cleanings, x-rays, oral exams, and even fluoride treatments and dental sealants, in some cases.

Additionally, dental insurance covers 80% of the cost of fillings and other “basic” procedures, and 50% of the cost of “major” procedures like root canals and crowns. For more information, we recommend consulting directly with your insurer or your insurance policy.

How Do I Make The Most Of My Child’s Dental Insurance?

Making the most of your child’s dental insurance policy is sure to save you quite a bit of cash. Here are a few tips on how you can maximize their insurance coverage and get the treatment your little one needs for less.

See an in-network dentist – Whenever possible, seeing an in-network dentist will save you money, and it will also simplify the billing and insurance claim process. Always prioritize seeing an in-network dentist!

Take advantage of preventive visits –
All dental insurance policies for kids cover the cost of preventive care like teeth cleanings and oral exams twice per year, as well as yearly oral exams. So make sure you bring your children to Shirlington Pediatric Dentistry twice per year. If you don’t, you’re leaving money on the table.

Max out your deductible –
If your child needs dental treatment and your dental plan has a yearly deductible that you must pay before coverage kicks in, it’s a good idea to max out the deductible. Then, you should get all of the treatments your child needs within the same calendar year. By doing so, you can avoid paying your deductible twice!

Know your annual limit
– Most dental plans have an annual limit, which can be as low as $1,000 or $2,000. These usually reset at the end of a calendar year. So with some planning (getting one filling in December and another in January of the next year, for example), you can avoid hitting your annual limit and save more money on pediatric dental care.
